Why Should Charities Use Twitter?

With 55 million visits and 6 million unique visits per month, Twitter is – without a doubt – one of the most successful social networking websites ever launched. It is also one of the fastest growing, with 72.5% of users signing up in the first 5 months of 2009, including 42.4% in March and April alone.

This article concentrates on practical ways in which charities can harness the power of this incredible online phenomenon.

Building a support base with Twitter is easy. The best way to experience this is to sign up for a free account and begin ‘following’ people of interest. Twitter’s widely acknolweged but as yet unwritten etiquette infers that it is fine to ‘follow’ people you don’t know. They can choose whether or not to follow you back – and, in my experience, people will almost always follow a good cause.

The next step is to consider what you are going to do with your followers. Twitter presents unrivalled opportunities for building brand awareness for your charity. Posting once or twice a day will get your message in front of your followers. Make that message interesting, informative and even evocative – and your followers will re-tweet and discuss them, driving more followers towards you.

If building brand awareness with Twitter is as simple as posting once or twice a day, consider what’s possible with a bit of work. The miracle of Twitter – and the trick to successfully turning your Twitter following into a loyal support base – is to engage with your followers on a personal level. Charities doing this effectively include Greenpeace, The National Trust and the RSPB.

The RSPB have a great mix of one-on-one engagement, and interesting, informative and relevant posts. Posts such as “@charliebarker wow! Thanks for that. Every penny makes a difference for conservation, and if u have fun bringing them in, so much the better!” sit happily alongside posts such as “Ever wondered what it’s like to live on a nature reserve? Check out our video about residential volunteering”.

Once you have an established support base, the possibilities are endless.

Fronting a cause which is not known about? Testicular cancer would have been a case-in-point a few years ago. Twitter enables you to quickly and effectively raise awareness.

Promoting an event? Twitter offers a fast, free and effective way to get details in front of thousands of supporters.

Need to instantly gauge public reaction to something? Twitter has the answer! Pose the question and have real-world answers flooding in within minutes.

High profile support and/or comment? Water Aid used Twitter to direct the following question at Nick Clegg – “G8 fails on water and sanitation, where do Lib Dems sit?”

One final use of Twitter – although I was unable to find a good example – is as a means of providing your services. Dogsblog use Twitter to inform their followers every time a new dog comes up for adoption, but a debt charity – for example – could use the service to provide specific advice to individuals.

Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

This is one disease that has defied man’s attempts at true understanding, and it is extremely difficult to pin point the specifics of it. Though a lot of things are known and have been said about this disease, regarding its causes, none have been proven to be of any substance. What is known, however, is that it is a genetic disease which occurs from birth; it has been suggested that the majority of those who suffer from this disease inherited it from birth, but there are few with a family history of the disease. This disease is characterized by overgrowths, tumors, and gigantism in organs and other body parts, and is essentially an overgrowth or a growth disorder. It is named after two doctors who made significant discoveries about it.

There are no exact known causes of this disease. They are just known to be genetic in most cases, and are due to birth disorders. Most birth conditions associated with this disease are divided into five main types. They include Macrosomia, which is a term used to describe a condition in which a child is born with weight and length above the normal 90th percentile. Also associated with the disease are macroglossia and ear creases or pits. These affect the middle abdominal walls including the umbilical hernia. Exomphalos and even diastastis can also be responsible for this, coupled with low levels of blood sugar after birth.

The symptoms of the disease are not so pronounced. However, some conditions in the body during and after birth might signal the possibility of this disease. These conditions include being greater than the average 90 percent of infants in weight and length during birth, large tongues, and the enlargement of some of the internal organs of the body called visceromegaly. Another symptom is a torn stomach wall or bellybutton, which causes protrusion of some portions of the abdominal wall or intestines. It can also be associated with the risk of blood cancers, unequal or asymmetric body growth, which is caused by the undue enlargement of one of the structures or parts of the body. Also, when a new born baby has an advanced bone age, to the age of four, these symptoms might be an indication of the occurrence of beckwith-wiedemann syndrome.

The cure and treatment of this disease commonly involve three main approaches. The first is cancer treatment. The next is physiotherapy and orthopedic management, and then surgery. Surgery is mainly done to correct defects that are noticed in the abdominal wall and the tongue. Surgery is also done to correct hernias, but only if they do not self-correct after four years. That of diastasis recti has a history of correcting itself in the long run. Meanwhile the surgery for the tongue is only done if it causes discomfort or even disrupts the feeding of the child. Hemi hypertrophy is treated with, and managed through, physiotherapy and orthopedic help. Cancer treatment is used in the presence of malignancies. This will also involve regular screening.

Lung melanoma is one of the killer ailments which have killed many people across the globe and deaths have been increased over the last decade. The main cause of this outrageous disease is smoking and use of tobacco. The diagnosis at initial stage may help in treating the malignant cells to some extent as the grade and type of malignant tumor are vital parts for the healing method.

Small cell lung cancer is very popular type of lung melanoma which takes time in treatment. Medical science has researched many effective processes for lung cancer treatments which depend on type and the health condition of a patient. For instance, if patients are suffering from breathing problem, surgery cannot be suggested for them.

Surgery process depends on the type, number and grade of tumor as some tumors may have margins where as other malignant tumor may be attached with each other. Surrey process is different for small and non small cell lung cancer.

It is well-known and successful technique which has been successful worldwide. Cancer care clinics are using external and internal radiotherapy clinical process under guidance of experienced oncologists who have depth knowledge of cancer and its effect. In this therapy, highly energetic x-ray is being implemented on divided cells, so that cells cannot grow in future. It is generally used with other therapy for better cure.

It is another effective technique which uses drug therapy to cure the ailment. The drug or medication process may take months or weeks depend upon the types of tumor. It is very effective for non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).One of the disadvantages of this technique is that it has side effects like hair fall, nausea, loss of appetite. This remedy is suggested to the patient when they diagnosed with lung cancer.

Photodynamic Therapy
It is one of the most successful therapies for lung cancer treatment which is mostly used for non small cells. It is the latest healing process which involves two steps the first one is medication of cells and laser beam is used in the second step.

Cancer care clinics are researching the latest and innovative technique for the best cure and prevention method. They collect history of each patient to deal new cases and use treatment equipments according to that. The big challenge is to kill the abnormal cells with effective healing techniques, so that world can be free from terrible disease cancer.

Prevent Breast Cancer Before It Gets A Chance To Get You!

October is sometimes known as pink ribbon month. The pink ribbons indicate that is the month for breast cancer awareness. Some companies use this month to pledge financial support to the cause and sell object colored in pink. It is always a good idea though to find out just how much of this money is going towards research and giving people information on breast cancer before you go and spend money on pink products.

The best thing you can do to prevent breast cancer is to know all about it, and when you should be screened. Recovery rates are increases when breast cancer is caught in the early stages. You can find this information on breast cancer on the Internet at any time, but during October it is highlighted in an effort to get more women to know and understand what they should be looking for, what their options are, and that breast cancer is not a death sentence if you are able to catch it early. Even cancer caught later on can be treated successfully on occasion.

One of the most important things to remember with information on breast cancer especially with something as serious as this is where you get your information from! Medical information on breast cancer abounds, especially on the internet, try to ensure it comes from doctors and research bodies that specialize in this area. Even though most information on breast cancer will be useful it’s always best to speak to your doctor and try to get the most up to date findings you can. This might also be information you want to share with women in your family so that they know they may be at risk and need to pay attention to breast health at a younger age.

This information and talking to your doctor can help to decide if you need to be screened sooner as opposed to later. Information is a valuable resource and so are your family especially if there is a history of breast cancer and this may mean that you need to be screened earlier and more regularly. Learning how to examine yourself is another valuable skill that could save you time. If you know how to properly check your breasts for lumps, you have a much greater chance of finding a lump early. It’s not just you that needs to learn how to self-examine either because all you other women family members need to know how important it is.

Alternative Cancer Treatment, Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Medical professionals today have been afforded the luxury of having available to them many different tools to assist in making breast cancer diagnosis more reliable, especially in its early stages. This is excellent news because it reduces the level of severity when detected early on.

Diagnosis begins with a clinical exam. The physician performs an exam using his hands which is similar to the recommended self-exam for all women over 19. Cancerous lumps typically feel hard and don’t move around like benign cysts. Cancer tumors usually have an irregular shape, while non cancerous lumps are round. Professionals are trained to distinguish the difference.

A mammogram assists in confirmation of the diagnosis. Modern digital mammograms typically rely on computer assistance. Detection of tumors is aided by complex algorithms that do a great job telling the difference between normal and suspect image sections. This tool greatly assists physicians in eliminating false positives and also helps in detecting smaller, less obvious issues in the early developmental stages.

Ultrasound technology is another modern method which has improved greatly since it was first introduced. They are perfect for helping to distinguish between cysts that are benign and cancerous tumors. Because cysts are harmless, fluid filled sacs they react differently to sound waves than the harder, denser cancerous cells.

MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging is another method used to diagnose breast cancer. Years ago it was unheard of for an insurance company to pay for this extremely pricey test. But recently costs have become lower and coverage has expanded. It is now more common. This machine works by passing a powerful magnetic field over the breasts, thus exciting the molecules in a way that does not harm the body, but still produces very distinctive results. This allows professionals to use images generated with an MRI to detect extremely small abnormalities and issues.

When other tests make professionals feel that a closer look is needed a biopsy is performed on the cells in question. Some may be as simple as a fine-needle aspiration where a small amount of fluid is removed with a needle from the breast lump in question. That fluid is then examined for cells that are indicative of cancer.

A deeper or core biopsy may be called for in certain cases. That too uses a needle, but one that’s thicker and removes tissue. Still more tissue is removed in a surgical biopsy. The sample is then examined by an oncologist for the presence of cancer cells.

A new test developed at John Hopkins offers promise for even more accurate early diagnosis. Called a QM-MSP (quantitative multiplex methylation-specific PCR), it relies on fluid drawn from the breast. That fluid is then chemically analyzed. When abnormally high levels of certain molecules are detected it indicates the presence of cancer cells. Some studies suggest that clusters with as few as 50 cancer cells can be detected in this way. It was able to detect cancer in 84% of breast tumor samples used.

With modern tests and techniques, diagnosis can be done early and with far greater reliability than in the past. That’s key to treating breast cancer at the earliest possible stage. That greatly improves the odds of keeping it from becoming a more serious matter than it has to be.

Stomach Cancer, Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment, Prognosis

Stomach cancer is common throughout the world and affects all races, it is more common in men than women, and has its peak age range between 40 and 60 years old. Stomach cancer mortality is higher in Japan and Chile, presumably because of the different diets in those countries where they are less dependent on red meat.

Over the last 25 years the incidence of stomach cancer in the western world has decreased by 50% and the resulting death rate is less than a third of what it used to be but in less developed countries it is still a major cause of death, probably because in these countries by the time the disease is diagnosed (usually by means of a Barium meal) the stomach cancer is at a very advanced stage.

There are several different types of stomach cancer, some of which are very rare. The most common types of stomach cancer start in the glandular cells of the stomach lining (adenocarcinomas), this is where stomach acid and digestive enzymes are made, and where most stomach cancers start. When the stomach cancer becomes more advanced, it can travel through the bloodstream and spread to organs such as the liver, lungs, and bones. Stomach cancers that start in the lymphatic tissue (lymphoma), in the stomach muscular tissue (sarcoma) or in the tissues that support the organs of the digestive system (gastrointestinal stromal tumors) are less common and are treated in different ways.

Early clues to stomach cancer are chronic dyspepsia and epigastric discomfort, followed in later stages by weight loss, anorexia, a feeling of fullness after eating, anemia and fatigue. Blood in the stools may also be present and if the Cancer is in the Cardia (top) vomiting may occur.

The exact cause of stomach cancer is unknown although the presence of the Helicopter pylori bacterium seems to be a major factor. Predisposing factors include environmental influences such as smoking and high alcohol intake. Because stomach cancer is more common amongst those with a family history and with people with type A blood, genetic factors are also implicated. Dietary factors, particularly methods of food preservation such as pickling, smoking or salting also have an influence on the prevalence of stomach cancer.

Stomach cancer is diagnosed through an examination that may include an upper gastrointestinal (GI) series; endoscopy or gastroscopy where a thin flexible tube is passed down the throat so the doctor can see into the stomach, esophagus and upper part of the bowel Barium meals and Barium swallows. Because stomach cancer can spread to the liver, the pancreas, and other organs near the stomach as well as to the lungs, the doctor may order a CT scan, a PET scan, an endoscopic ultrasound exam, or other tests to check these areas.

Stomach cancer can spread (metastasize) to the esophagus or the small intestine, and can extend through the stomach wall to nearby lymph nodes and organs. Metastasis occurs in 80-90% of individuals with stomach cancer, with a five year survival rate of 75% in those diagnosed in early stages and less than 30% of those diagnosed in late stages.

Although stomach cancer may be treated with surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy, in many cases surgery is the treatment of choice. Even in patients whose disease is not considered surgically curable, resection offers a palliative effect and improves potential benefits from chemotherapy.

The nature and extent of the cancer determines what kind of surgery is most appropriate. Common surgical procedures include, partial and total removal of the stomach.
Antiemetics can control nausea, which increases as the cancer advances. In the more advanced stages, sedatives and tranquilizers may be necessary to control anxiety. Narcotics are commonly necessary to control sever and unremitting pain.
In some cases of advanced stomach cancer, a laser beam directed through an endoscope can vaporize most of the tumor and relieve obstruction without an operation.

Stomach cancer is curable if detected early, but most people do not seek medical help until the disease is quite advanced, possibly because symptoms occur late and are often vague and non-specific. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidant vitamins (such as A and C) appears to lower the risk of stomach cancer. The rate of stomach cancer is about doubled in smokers so the cessation of smoking is essential.

In the United States and most of the Western world, the 5-year survival rate ranges from 5% to 15%. In Japan, where stomach cancer often is diagnosed early, the 5 year survival rate is about 50%. Five year survival rates for more advanced stomach cancers range from, around 20% for those with regional disease to almost nil for those with distant metastases.

Treatment for metastatic stomach cancer can relieve symptoms and sometimes prolong survival, but long remissions are not common. The survival of inoperable stomach cancer is usually only a few months if untreated. With chemotherapy the average survival is about 12 months. If cancer is found before it has spread, the five-year relative survival rate is about 61%.

Permanently Prevent Cravings

Let’s talk about a permanent solution to cravings. This will include some simple yet profound lifestyle modifications and a revolutionary herb, literally named the “sugar destroyer,” that blocks the taste and absorption of sweets, suppresses cravings and boosts insulin production.

A craving isn’t a bad thing. It is your body telling you that you are out of fuel. The minute you find yourself reaching for some dark chocolate, a cup of coffee, a chip or a diet soda, the body is already in an emergency response. The blood sugar has already crashed and the body is producing toxic stress fighting hormones that are now known to be the leading cause of aging, disease, cancer and premature death.

So yes, eat that piece of dark chocolate and enjoy it because the real damage has already been done. We mistakenly blame the chocolate, but it is not what we crave that is the problem. After you have thoroughly enjoyed that scrumptious piece of chocolate, now ask the $ 25,000 questions, “Why did I crave it in the first place?” and “How do I stop them?”

A craving is an emergency panic button demanding quick energy because the blood sugar is falling. In this stressed chemistry the body is told to store fat and crave sugar – or any other quick injection of energy it can find.

Of course this leads to a host of problems, such as – most importantly – weight gain and obesity, which are the number one risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Lack of exercise is second, which I covered in my last video-newsletter Be Fit, Thin and Calm in 12 Minutes a Day.

When under stress the body will first utilize fast burning sugar and carbs while saving and storing as much fat as it can. Why? Because fat burns slowly. So if there is no food, the fat will provide lasting energy and postpone starvation. When we let our blood sugar crash our body prepares to survive a possible famine.

Fat metabolism should deliver about half the daily fuel supply and energy needs. The other half is from carbohydrates and a very small amount from protein. Here lies the problem: Americans have become really bad fat burners and really good sugar burners!

We have been told to eat six small meals a day to keep the blood sugar stable and the waistline trim. Conventional suggestions are to eat breakfast, then a snack, lunch, then a snack, supper, then a snack and then go to bed. When the body is fed so often throughout the day, why would it ever burn it’s fat stores when a steady supply of newly digested snack food is readily available?

The body becomes conditioned to fuel up every 2-3 hours. Slowly the blood sugar’s ability to stay stable and last for many hours is replaced by the need to eat a snack every 2-3 hours. If a snack is missed, the blood sugar crashes, the cravings go wild, and the mood and energy plummet. Within weeks of letting the blood sugar crash, what was initially just a suggestion to eat every 2-3 hours has been replaced with extreme hunger and the need to eat every 2-3 hours.

In the old days a farmer could spend hours in the fields with no problem. Imagine if they had to come into the house every 2-3 hours for a snack! This kind of blood sugar instability is a modern day imbalance.
Six meals a day is a medicinal diet for treating the symptoms of severe hypoglycemia. It was never intended to be a way of life. At no other time in the history have humans eaten constantly until present day America. We are told that eating six meals a day will help us lose weight by keeping the metabolism high and revved up and that it won’t let the body store fat. Yes it will do all that, but in a totally manipulated and unnatural way – mostly for cosmetic reasons but not for good health!

We are not meant to have our metabolism revved up all day. It depletes and exhausts the adrenals (which ultimately causes fat storage) and never gives the digestion a rest.

While we won’t store fat eating every 2-3 hours, we also will never burn any stored fat. Cancer causing toxins are stored in our fat cells and the fat needs a reason to burn.

With blood sugars artificially propped up from constant feeding, the ability to make energy last is replaced with fragile energy, constant hunger, mood instability and extreme cravings if a meal or snack is missed.

If you don’t snack between breakfast and lunch, the body is forced to burn its own fat to supply energy throughout the morning hours. If you eat a carrot as a snack, the body will burn the carrot for extra energy rather than the stored fat.

Between lunch and supper fat is used as the fuel to make it through the afternoon without cravings. An afternoon snack, even if it’s healthy, simply tells the body to burn the snack instead of the fat. Between supper and breakfast the body makes its longest fat burning journey, breaking the fast with breakfast. One of the major reasons why folks don’t sleep through the night is because they have lost the ability to burn fat – the slow and lasting fuel that allows us to sleep deeply all night, and these cravings wake them up.

While we know carrying extra weight is a risk factor for diabetes and heart disease, there are other reasons why burning fat is crucial to our health. They include:

– Fat is a slow burning fuel that allows us to go many hours without food.
– Fat is calm fuel that stills and relaxes the nervous system. It is a de-stress, anti-anxiety fuel.
– Fat burning neutralizes excess disease producing acids that are by-products of stress fighting hormones.
– Fat burning stimulates drainage of toxins through the lymphatic system.
– Fat burning detoxifies cancer causing fat soluble chemicals that can store in the fat cells and brain for 20-30+ years.
– Fat burning releases molecules of emotion which Ayurveda calls mental ama. These toxic emotions store in the fat cells and trigger negative reactive patterns of behavior.
– Fat is the body’s survival fuel. If the body feels safe, it will burn fat and trigger safety and repair.

If eating 3 meals a day presents a challenge or you just can’t seem to muster the will power to give up the dark chocolate, coffee or jelly beans because your cravings are just out of control, let me introduce to you an herb that is nothing short of amazing.

Gymnema sylvestre is an Ayurvedic herb from the milkweed family that is locally known as Gurmar or the “Sugar Destroyer.” If you put just a taste of this herb on your tongue and then ate a candy bar or anything with sugar, you simply would not taste the sugar. It literally blocks the absorption of the sugar through the taste buds and the intestinal wall (1). The active ingredient, gymnemic acids, have receptors both in the gut and on the tongue so sugar absorption is blocked. When sugar absorption is blocked, cravings are reduced and blood sugar highs and lows are neutralized (1). If sugar is blocked at both points of entry the body must get its energy elsewhere. Fat is mobilized as the fuel supply of choice. Sugar Destroyer resets the body’s ability to use fat as fuel rather than sugar or carbohydrates. Sugar Destroyer also helps to stabilize blood sugar levels and makes the transition from six meals a day to three doable – and even preferable.

In one study, Gymnema was administered for 18 to 20 months to 22 Type II diabetics taking conventional medication. All patients showed a significant reduction in blood glucose levels. Five of the 22 maintained their blood glucose levels without conventional drugs and the dose of the medications were reduced in the others (2).

This powerful herb is a harmonizer for the blood sugar and pancreas. It balances both high blood sugar, as in diabetes, and low blood sugar, as in hypoglycemia. In natural medicine this is called “herbal intelligence” because it has the ability to bring balanced function to the pancreas and blood sugar rather than just reduce symptoms.

In another study, Gymnema was measured to double the islet number (clumps of pancreatic cells) and beta cell number (insulin-producing cells) in diabetic rat pancreases. The study suggested that Gymnema may improve health of the pancreas thereby providing a second mechanism for its action in diabetes (3). In diabetes the islet and beta cells in the pancreas become non-functional. This demonstrates the Sugar Destroyer’s ability to rejuvenate pancreatic and blood sugar function.

Brain Metastasis Therapeutics Market Volume Forecast and Value Chain Analysis 2016-2026

Brain metastasis is a type of cancer that usually occurs due to the spread of cancerous cells to brain. Thus, it is also known as metastatic brain tumor or secondary brain cancer, while in primary brain cancer the tumor occurs in the brain. Brain metastasis is common as compared to the primary brain cancer. Brain metastasis is a major complication of systemic cancer and is one of the major reasons causing morbidity and mortality in cancer patients. The common type of cancer that spread to the brain are breast cancer, lung cancer, melanoma, renal cell carcinoma and colon. The cancer may spread to any part of brain but it is commonly found in the brain cerebrum. Cerebellum and stem cells are rarely found to be affected by brain metastasis. Brain metastasis may be single tumor or multiple, although multiple brain metastasis is common. The symptoms associated with brain metastasis are edema, seizure and severe headache. Therefore the first line of treatment for brain metastasis is treating the symptoms.
